Sanofi Aventis, a Paris based drug developing company, said that the Lantus injection developed by it is as safe as any other type of insulin, especially in cases of blindness and poor eye sight.

In a 5 year study, Lantus was compared to other types of insulin called neural protamine hagedorn involving 1024 patients. It was proved that the drug Lantus does not cause more diabetic retinopathy cases than others. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition of blindness caused as a complication related to diabetes.

Sanofi Aventis said that results of the study are published in the online journal of Diabetolgia. Actually the need to conduct this study came from health concerns related to Lantus and the suspicions that the drug is linked to increased risks of cancer. A week ago, the FDA said that it has been reviewing the drug Lantus to prove the suspicion.

European Association for Study of Diabetes also conducted a study by reviewing an insurance database of 127,000 patients from 4 different European countries. It was found that out of 100 patients who use Lantus for at least 1 ½ years, one extra person has been diagnosed with cancer. The American Diabetes Association has also urged the patients to consult the physician before stopping Lantus all at once. In the year 2008, Lantus revenues reached $3.5 million.

Tips : Keeping to a healthy diabetic diet may help to prevent diabetic retinopathy.
